With major environmental crises gripping mankind across borders, the focus on environmental sciences and its related fields has gone up to a large scale. This erstwhile neglected area has now taken the forefront at many world conferences. As far as the field of Biotechnology Studies itself is concerned, Environmental Biotechnology was either unheard of, or considered as a far-off support science up till a couple of years ago. Today, it happens to be amongst the hot topics of discussion amongst academic circles specifically pertaining to biotechnology. In simple terminology, Environmental Biotechnology simply refers to the study of biological processes or phenomena which naturally occur in the environment. Examples of such processes include Photosynthesis, or Microbial Decomposition, or even Nitrogen Fixation. Earlier, the prime focus of Environmental Biotechnology was to maximize commercial benefits out of the same. Today, although commercial benefits have not taken a backseat, there is a sure-shot focus on environmental conservation as well.

Which is why, Molecular Diagnostics has in itself become a separate field of study for budding biotechnology experts today.
